COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Collagen Induction Therapy (also known as MICRONEEDLING) is a quick and easy treatment that can remove years from your skin by enhancing smoothness and tone with very little downtime.

WHY MICRONEEDLE?

As we age, the natural production of the skin’s supporting cells, fibroblasts, and the skin’s collagen and elastin, naturally diminish leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. Stimulating the skin to produce more fibroblasts, collagen and elastin is called collagen induction therapy (i.e., microneedling), and is used as an alternative to facelifts and other surgical anti-aging interventions. Microneedling can also break through scar tissue to promote the skin’s ability to create new and healthy skin, making this treatment a great option for healing acne scars.

Microneedling has been around for a while. It involves making ‘micro injuries’ to the skin with very fine needles. These injuries prompt the skin to go into healing mode, which stimulates the release of collagen, elastin, and fibroblasts. This, in turn, reduces appearance of acne scars, and reduces the signs of aging, like sagging, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.

WHAT IS THE APPOINTMENT LIKE?

When you come to Symmetry for a microneedling treatment, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and a topical anesthetic cream will be applied to help with your comfort. Once you are numbed, the microneedling device will be used to create microscopic punctures in the skin with very tiny needles, just enough to kick start your body’s natural healing process. I use AnteAGE microneedling serum during the treatment. Read more about AnteAGE here.

WHO SHOULD HAVE THIS SERVICE?

Anyone who is experiencing sagging, wrinkles, fine lines, or acne scars. If you would like to improve, repair and create a more youthful rejuvenated look.

WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS SERVICE?

If you have active pustular acne. If you are prone to keloid scarring. If you have any blood disorder or skin disease (eczema, psoriasis etc). If you have recently had any facial surgery, fillers, botox, etc (you should give your skin about 2-4 weeks). If you are pregnant or breast feeding.

HOW MANY CIT (MICRONEEDLING) SESSIONS ARE RECOMMENDED?

While you are sure to see some improvement from 1 session, to truly make some beautiful changes in your skin, a series of 4-6 sessions, 2-4 weeks apart is recommended. FUN FACT: skin treated with 4 microneedling sessions spaced 1 month apart produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin 6 months after completing treatment! You will see continued improvement!

IS THERE “DOWNTIME”? OR AFTERCARE?

It is completely normal for your skin to look red, swollen, and irritated and feel like you have a sunburn for 48-72 hours after your treatments. It is recommended to not apply make-up for 48 hours after treatment. Additionally, when you resume use of make-up, do not apply using brushes or sponges that are not new or clean. During the first 2 hours after your treatment you will apply the provided serum until it is completed. For the first 2 days after treatment it’s recommended to apply a hyalauronic acid serum (like Lira’s Hydra Infusion) to your skin, growth factor serum (like AnteAGE serum and accelerator), and also peptide creams are highly recommended. You may apply a 1% hydro-cortisone if needed. No sun exposure. No excess exercise. You will need to use a 100% mineral sunscreen (like Coola) for 7 days after your treatment as well. No use of scrubs, retinols, hydroxy acids or anything active for 7 days post treatment.
